The Tokyo Garden Palace Hotel is currently hosting the "Snow Country Echigo's Three Major Tsuru Hina (Paper Cranes) - Yamagata Prefecture Minamisato's "Kasa Fukurou" and the Tsuru Decorations from Oshika City, Miyagi Prefecture" exhibition until March 19, 2026. Approximately 3,000 Tsuru Hina are on display, including Tsuru Hina for praying for the recovery from the East Japan Earthquake and "Kasa Fukurou," a traditional craft from the city of Yamagata. Additionally, during the event period, a special sale of local products from Echigo will be held for two days only on February 24 (Tuesday) and 25 (Wednesday), featuring strawberries from Niigata and Sasa Dango.

The "7th Spring Decoration: Large Tsuru-shi Ornament Exhibition" held in the first-floor lobby of Tokyo Garden Palace Hotel is displaying "Tsuru-shi Hina" wishing for the recovery from the East Japan earthquake, "Kasa Fukku," one of the three major Tsuru-shi ornaments passed down in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, and Tsuru-shi ornament works by Kikko Mazagi Class from Oshika City, Miyagi Prefecture, until March 19, 2026.

A miniature of three "Tsurushibina" (hanging dolls), representing the "Happiness-Calling Tsurushibina" of Jōgō Town, Niigata Prefecture; "Tsurushibina Tsuru no Onegaishi" (The Grateful Crane) of Tsunan Town; and "Happiness-Calling Tsurushibina: The Journey of the Snow Rabbit" of Yamazawa Town, are on display, praying for the reconstruction following the 2011 East Japan earthquake.

"Kasa Fukurou" (literally "Umbrella Blessing") is one of the three major types of hanging decorations in Japan, and is passed down in Sakata City, in the Sanda area of Yamagata Prefecture. It is characterized by hanging decorations that express wishes at the tip of an umbrella.

Tsurushi decoration display

There are hand-sewn decorations such as flowers, animals, and baby figures. They are displayed regardless of the season and are also given as gifts for celebrations such as weddings and childbirth.

The origin dates back to the Edo period. It is said that women made them using old cloth and old cotton, praying for the health and happiness of their families, and offered them to temples. Each decoration has its own meaning and has been passed down as a traditional culture.

From late February to early November every year, the "Mizunomachi Sakata Umbrella Blessing (R) Exhibition" is held at Yamakou Kurabu in Sakata City.

Works from the Miyagi Prefecture Kikko Mazagi Classroom are also on display.

"Kikko-mazagi" is a dialect term from the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture, meaning to cut fabric or tear it into small pieces and play with them. Students attending classes make "tsurushi-hina," which are small dolls made with wishes for the happiness of newborn children, and these works have been cherished as precious guardians for babies.

During the exhibition, a wide variety of tsurushi hina (hanging dolls), ranging from small items for about 1,000 yen to more elaborate decorations, are sold.

Sasa Dango

"Niigata Products Exhibition," featuring local specialties from Niigata Prefecture, will be held only on February 24 (Tuesday) and 25 (Wednesday), during the event period. Check out local products directly delivered from the Echigo region, including strawberries "Echigo Hime," "Fragrance Peach," as well as Sasa Dango, Hagi Soba, and Uonuma Pork.

Also, at the indoor restaurant "Aurora," a collaboration lunch using Niigata prefecture's local noodles (rice flour-added fresh pasta and local yakisoba) will be available on weekdays from February to March.
